What Makes a Serial Killer The Psychological Aspect - Free Essay Example
Multicide is the act of killing multiple people. There are three different categories of multicide; mass murder, spree murder, and serial murder (Knight, 2006). The main difference between these three levels of mass murder is the patterns in which the murders are conducted among each. While all three murders pertain interesting questions as why each of the three categories level occur, the main question for this paper is what makes a serial killer? Serial murderers are classified as people who randomly kill three or more people, who are often complete strangers to them, within 30 days. However, there needs to be some time that elapses between the killings like a cooling off period (Haggerty, 2009). In her article, Some Thoughts on The Psychological Roots of The Behavior of Serial Killers as Narcissists: An Object Relations Perspective, Rhonda G. Knight best describes serial killers as a type of abnormal behavior which breaches the boundaries of consensual rationality and normality, and act insane and in forms of terrorism without being classified as insane (Knight, 2006). Serial killers have been dated back to the 1400s, and some of the most commonly known serial killers known across the United States are Jack the Ripper, The Zodiac Killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Ted Bundy to name a few. Serial killers are also portrayed in movies as well. Such characters are Jigsaw, Chucky, and Freddy Krueger. Not all serial killers have the same motive, and that is why that today there is still no direct understanding as the psychological and criminal behavior behind serial killers (Knight, 2006). From what we do know, there are four main components to understand a serial killer; personality type, child abuse, sex drive, and narcissism. The personality types a serial portrays can be bipolar mood disorder, paranoia, antisocial personality disorder, schizoid personality, the most common is dissociative identity disorder (Knight, 2006). Dissociative identity disorder is described as a disruption of identity characterized by two or more personality states (Gabbard, 2014). What this means is that a person with dissociative identity disorder has multiple personalities. Multiple personality disorder generally forms through traumatic experiences and the brain will break off different personalities to essentially form different people within one body. Movies such as The Three Faces of Eve correctly portray dissociative identity disorder. Roughly 1-3% of the general population across the world has been diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. It is slowly becoming a more common psychological disorder to diagnose, but still little is known about how to treat patients with it (Gabbard, 2014). Psychopathy is another personality type disorder that is known among serial killers. Jeffrey Dahmer is the most famous example of psychopathy. Psychopathic serial killers are generally manipulative, remorseless, and use charm and violence to lure their victims (LaBrode, 2007). The cause of this personality disorder relates to the amygdala in the brain. As Rebecca Taylor Labrode states in her article, Etiology of the Psychopathic Serial Killer: An Analysis of Antisocial Personality Disorder, Psychopathy, and Serial Killer Personality and Crime Scene Characteristics, the amygdala is involved in aversive conditioning, instrumental learning, and responses to fearful and sad facial expressions, which are all processes that have been found to be impaired in people with psychopathy (LaBrode, 2007). Personality types are not the sole cause for serial killers, but they are one piece to the puzzle. Many of the issues that are brought upon by serial killers all start with their childhood, and w hat I mean by that is generally their childhood is not all chocolate and rainbows. For the most part, the childhood of serial killers is violent and abusive. There are generally four categories of abuse; physical abuse, psychological abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. These serial killers, as children, do not have to face abuse to themselves to develop issues. Seeing loved one experience it or being surrounded in that environment can lead to detrimental effects on children (Mitchel Aamodt, 2005). The presence, or absence, of a father or mother can be a factor in serial killers. As well as whether they were neglectful, controlling, smothering, or authoritative (Knight, 2006). Anger and aggression begin to form early on in childhood, and as young adolescents they could start running into trouble with the law with misdemeanors. Sexual abuse in households can play a factor in a strong sex drive in serial killers. Serial killers tend to have an uncontrollable sex drive and are sexually motivated. They generally kill for some sexual gratification (Mitchell Aamodt, 2005). According to Zelda Knight, characteristics of sexually driven serial killers include humiliating and degrading their victims, take trophies from their victims, leave a signature, and enjoy the torture and pain of their victims. They get off from the torture and pain of their victims (Knight, 2006). Another characteristic is that they generally kill prostitutes. This characteristic can be due to that many of their mothers were prostitutes and they were the outcome of appointments between their mother and one of the men (Knight, 2006). For many of them, they are the offspring of illegitimacy, or for many given up and out up for adoption by their birth mothers. The final component to evaluate is the narcissism among serial killers. What is meant among this is that serial killers take pride among their and they would like to be known for it. The common characteristics listed previously provide examples for this, as well as a few more characteristics. Such characteristics include; take trophies from their victims, they are above average intelligence, sometimes revisit the scene, and show no signs of abnormality (Knight, 2006). The main, important characteristic that shows their level of narcissism is leaving a signature at the crime scene. It could be a label, or symbol that they leave behind as a trademark for them, or their signature can be a unique way in which they handle their victims before they kill them. The four components that were examined among serial killers were their personality types, their childhood experience growing up, their insatiable sex drive, and their level of narcissism. As stated in the beginning of the paper, to this day we do not know the direct relationship that causes people to turn into serial killers later on in life. This is due to the fact that not all serial killers act the same way, and they are all triggered and driven by different things. Excessive drug and alcohol abuse, uncontrollable rage, being in charge or have the power, and the tendency for their violence to increase over time are other factors that can contribute to the cause of some psychopaths (Knight, 2006). However, what is known so far is that the four main components commonly seen among serial killers is the four thoroughly explained in this paper. After being discovered, scientists later learned he had sixty one tattoos. However, with the announcement of withdrawal of support by the government couple of years back, the car industry is about to come to a sad demise. The government would withdraw all support from the car manufacturing industry by February 2018 in wake of which the various manufacturers would close their plants citing economic infeasibility (Dowling, 2017). In this backdrop, the objective of this report is to highlight the government policy with regards to car manufacturing and whether the policy decision taken by the government is correct or not in wake of economic rationale. Discussion Even though the car manufacturing industry traces a long history in Australia but the same would not have been possible without state support. This state support over the years has been extended through protectionism so as to discriminate against the imports and also through various incentives. Infact, it is estimated that over the last decade only, a total sum of $ 5 billion has been extended as state support to car manufacturing industries (Dowling, 2015). Also, it is noteworthy that that the government policy since long has been of managed decline which was never aimed at making the industry sustainable but rather ensuring that the state support be withdrawn in a gradual manner so that the impact on the economy is minimised (Conley, 2014). The main reason for providing support is the employment which is provided both directly and indirectly. The indirect employment is also significant considering the auto ancillaries which are in business so as to provide various parts to the car manufacturing facilities based in Australia. The contribution of car manufacturing to employment in various states of Australia as a percentage of all manufacturing jobs is apparent from the following graph (Jericho, 2014). The pivotal question which arises is why the state support is needed for the Australian car manufacturers to survive. The explanation for this lies in the production costs associated with cars which renders them non-competitive with regards to other car manufacturers. In the cost of production, the particularly concerning cost is labour cost which for car manufacturing tends to be significant (Dowling, 2015). Being a developed country with limited supply of skilled manpower and strict wage laws, the wages paid to the workers in Australia are significantly higher as compared to the low cost destinations found in Asia for car manufacturing. Further, in the recent times, the government has completed removed the import tariffs on cars which has made imported cars more competitive despite the transportation cost. Till now the state was providing support though reluctantly to this ailing industry (Dowling, 2017). Now since the plug has been pulled by the state government, the critical question arises as to whether the industry can sustain through any reforms or policy change. In this regards, it is noteworthy that for production of any good, the factors of production play a vital role. With regards to Australia, it is apparent that the factors of production which Australia has abundant supply of is capital and technology but not labour. This is in sharp contract with Asian developing nations which have vast availability of labour which is semi-skilled and owing to the high unemployment and labour supply, the prevailing wages are quite low which lowers the overall cost of production in these nations. Further, these countries also provide huge markets on accounting of local consumption and hence various foreign manufacturers are locating their manufacturing plants in these locations so as to serve the domestic demand and also cater to exports at a lower cost (KPMG, 2014). It is apparent that Australia by virtue of the factor or resource endowments is more suited for service industry and primary industry (such as agriculture and mining). As a result, it would not be possible for Australian car manufacturing companies to compete with these Asian manufacturing hubs in terms of cost. But, there is an alternative model which is practiced by western car manufacturers based out of Europe that have concentrated on luxury cars only and outsourced the production of mass vehicles if any to low cost destinations (KPMG, 2014). Since the core competency of these developed nations lie in technology, high skilled manpower and capital, hence these have leveraged the available resources to manufacture luxury cars. Similar endeavour could be focused by Australia also having the same set of resources but still on account of the geographical factors, this plan is not feasible in Australia. The European car manufacturers tend to have a significant sized market based at hom e and neighbouring developed countries of Western Europe. However, Australia does not have that privilege with the only neighbouring country of New Zealand and therefore the collective demand from these two nations would not justify setting up a production unit for luxury cars (Williams, 2016). Conclusion Based on the above discussion, it would be appropriate to conclude that the car manufacturing industry in Australia had to close down as it was unsustainable from the beginning. Neither can the Australian manufacturers compete in terms of cost nor can they venture into high end cars due to lack of demand. As a result, it does not make sense to sustain an industry which is not competitive in the modern world when imports are becoming increasingly prevalent. The move by the government is prudent especially considering the fiscal deficit in face of the slowdown from China. It is important that children feel valued as this raises their self esteem and will help the practitioner to build a positive relationship with them. Practitioners can make children feel valued by making sure that they listen to the children and take their views into account; they can also acknowledge children’s efforts and achievements and give positive feedback; taking into account their ideas and interests is also important as the practitioners can make an effort to include these in activities and finally practitioners also need to listen to the children’s fears and concerns. Respecting them is also crucial as it helps them to learn the appropriate way to respect others and will make them feel that their views are being listened to. Another reason why it is important that practitioners understand the limits and boundaries of their work is due to child protection. Every setting will have a child protection policy that needs to be addressed with the utmost responsibility. Every practitioner must find out whether or not a badge is required, if they need to sign in/ out and what is required of them when it comes to contact with children. Physical contact with children is allowed to a certain degree but the setting supervisors and parents will require assurance of their children’s welfare. Another reason that practitioners understand the limits and boundaries of their work is due to childrens behaviour. Children’s behaviour in the setting is usually good but isolated incidents will occur and as a practitioner it is important that you understand where you stand when it comes to dealing with these incidents. Also encouraging children to become overexcited must also be prevented as this may cause more frequent incidents and the children need to be learning and developing in exciting ways but never in a way that will induce unwanted behaviour. Another reason that practitioners understand the limits and boundaries of their work is due to confidentiality. In the setting you will gain knowledge about the children, your colleges and the childrens parents. Understanding which information can be shared with others is very important, a leak of any sensitive information can be very upsetting and may compromise your settings policies and the trust between the parents and the staff. LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY As the method of communication used for the survey is face-to-face or door-to-door, the limitations include limited geographical flexibility, high cost and difficulty in call back or follow-up. The entire surveys, research, analysis and decisions are based on the primary data collected by interviewing people from different cities. So the project is highly reliable on the perceptions, thoughts and ideas of people, which are ever changing. Also measuring the cognitive, affective and behavioural components of an attitude is a limitation. The project on brand tracking is limited to the semi-urban regions of India and does not include the urban cities. RESEARCH PROCESS ADOPTED Both the projects that have been selected are research based projects. To study the impact of marketing collaterals in the branches of HDFC bank in Mumbai city as well as for tracking the image of HDFC bank in semi-urban regions, a research had to be made which followed a process that is divided in 7 steps which are as follows: The entire research process has been designed keeping these 7 steps in mind. Accordingly, a schedule was formed and the stipulated time frame was decided to complete the tasks of the schedule. This helped complete the projects in a smooth and systematically planned manner. THE SCHEDULE OF TASKS IS AS FOLLOWS METHODOLGY USED The methodology adopted for researching on both the projects is by collecting primary data through questionnaire method. Customers as well as non-customers are interviewed using questionnaires on face-to-face basis by visiting different semi-urban regions of a few cities where HDFC bank has its branches located at. Data collected from questionnaires will be used in percentage form as the primary data for making analysis. It is a stringent research methodology based on a perception based survey which would include parameters like brand awareness, brand image/perception, brand recall value, brand performance and brand association. The process for preparing the questionnaires for the brand tracking survey is by interviewing 100 people (random sampling) on what they feel are important attributes or features that they look for while selecting a bank for opening a CASA account. The next step is to select the features that have been desired by maximum number of people asked. These features are to be included in the questionnaire along with the other questions for tracking the brand image of HDFC bank. By multiplying the rank given by interviewees to the importance level of the attribute, a clear idea can be drawn as to where HDFC bank stands as compared to its competitors and in which areas the bank need to work upon. That pretty much has been HDFC banks story as it emerged from the image of a state owned housing finance corporation to a slick new age universal bank. By observing and studying how effective these collaterals actually are, we could do a cost-benefit analysis and also provide recommendations on improving the effectiveness and usefulness of these collaterals by making desired modifications. The project involves observing visitors and also using questionnaires to identify the effective usage of marketing collaterals in the branches of HDFC bank spread over Mumbai city. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT Impact of marketing collaterals in branches: HDFC bank has 1780 branches and 5231 ATMs in 833 Indian towns and cities. Every branch has several marketing collaterals placed with the intention of spreading awareness about the bank and for improving sales. HDFC bank incurs expenses to put up these marketing collaterals. If the collaterals do not help the bank up to the desired extent at which the bank requires then it is considered that the bank is making losses on these marketing collaterals. The core objective of this project is to study the usefulness of marketing collaterals and to identify the obstacles that are faced by the customer/visitor in utilizing these collaterals. Thus, changes can be suggested in order to improve the utility of these marketing collaterals. Brand tracking of HDFC bank in semi-urban regions of India: A brand plays a very vital role in the sales of any company. The image that people have about a certain brand influences them to make decision regarding whether to use a certain product or service of that particular brand. Thus, in order to improve sales, it is very important to improve the brands image in the minds of people. Brand tracking is a methodology which helps in tracking and identifying the brands image i.e. what people perceive about the particular company. Identifying the brands image is very helpful in placing marketing strategies. The objective of this project is to track the image of HDFC bank in the minds of its customers as well as non-customers in semi-urban markets of India and identifying the banks brand position as compared to its competitors. BENEFITS TO THE ORGANIZATION With the help of this survey, HDFC Bank can identify how much impact its each marketing collaterals has on the customers and which are the collaterals which are not helpful or fail to induce enquiries from the customers. Also the reason behind the collaterals not being attractive are found out and accordingly modifications are suggested. Thus, the effectiveness of the marketing collaterals at various branches of Mumbai city can be increased. The brand tracking survey would help HDFC Bank to identify what people in semi-urban regions perceive about it. Also it can know where it stands as compared to its competitors and what people understand about HDFC Banks local taglines. The brand awareness, visibility, likability and its recall value is calculated. Future marketing strategies can be designed using this information. Apart from these core objectives, HDFC Bank can also use the database collected by the survey for generating leads and other such purposes. LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY As the method of communication used for the survey is face-to-face or door-to-door, the limitations include limited geographical flexibility, high cost and difficulty in call back or follow-up. The entire surveys, research, analysis and decisions are based on the primary data collected by interviewing people from different cities. So the project is highly reliable on the perceptions, thoughts and ideas of people, which are ever changing. Also measuring the cognitive, affective and behavioural components of an attitude is a limitation. The project on brand tracking is limited to the semi-urban regions of India and does not include the urban cities. RESEARCH PROCESS ADOPTED Both the projects that have been selected are research based projects. To study the impact of marketing collaterals in the branches of HDFC bank in Mumbai city as well as for tracking the image of HDFC bank in semi-urban regions, a research had to be made which followed a process that is divided in 7 steps which are as follows: The entire research process has been designed keeping these 7 steps in mind. Accordingly, a schedule was formed and the stipulated time frame was decided to complete the tasks of the schedule. This helped complete the projects in a smooth and systematically planned manner. THE SCHEDULE OF TASKS IS AS FOLLOWS METHODOLGY USED The methodology adopted for researching on both the projects is by collecting primary data through questionnaire method. Customers as well as non-customers are interviewed using questionnaires on face-to-face basis by visiting different semi-urban regions of a few cities where HDFC bank has its branches located at. Data collected from questionnaires will be used in percentage form as the primary data for making analysis. It is a stringent research methodology based on a perception based survey which would include parameters like brand awareness, brand image/perception, brand recall value, brand performance and brand association. The process for preparing the questionnaires for the brand tracking survey is by interviewing 100 people (random sampling) on what they feel are important attributes or features that they look for while selecting a bank for opening a CASA account. The next step is to select the features that have been desired by maximum number of people asked. These features are to be included in the questionnaire along with the other questions for tracking the brand image of HDFC bank. By multiplying the rank given by interviewees to the importance level of the attribute, a clear idea can be drawn as to where HDFC bank stands as compared to its competitors and in which areas the bank need to work upon.
